A few etymologists researched and found out old papers and documents suggested that the word “Gitano” originated from the ancient currency of Gitano used by Gitanian’s ancestors. The currency existed and was widely used even before Gitano was considered a real country. After that, the country was formed and the currency finally became the name of the country at the first years after formation.

In October 21st 2014, the Democratic Party has announced the name-changing of the country, from “Gitano” into “Republic of Gitania" in order to fit better with the current denomym of the country, which is “Gitanian”.
